  1. Hi!

I like everything Asian. There are no other websites like this for black people in Asia.

Have you ever been to South Korea and Thailand? If not, do you know anyone who has? It would help knowing whats going on there (like the reactions of them when they see multi-cultural people *black people*) because I plan to take a trip around Asia to experience different cuisines.

Can I have some feedback, please.

  2. hi querteur
yes, i’ve been to the phillipines, vietnam, malaysia, thailand and I live in japan. i guess all the american post-colonial brainwash has got you worried LOL! (we’re bad and people hate us…blah blah blah) black people are welcome all over asia. people will definitely stare and point because you are such a curiosity. it’s hardly ever out of anger unless you’ve obviously done something wrong to them! smile and understand some of the faux-pas and you’ll have fun wherever you go!

  3. Hey,
your website is awesome. I know that as blacks we are a “different type of foreigners” . I’m east african and have always been interested in different cultures especially Japanese and Spanish.
So I decided that I’d study abroad in Either Kyoto/Tokyo/Osaka and Mexico/Peru. I am glad to see we’re not more hated than anyone else because my parents have been trying to get that into my head  .
Got any tips for homestaying students?

  5. Hey! I love your website! I’m Afro-Latina (Black/Puerto Rican) and I can’t seem to find any websites or communities that acknowledge Black people’s interests in the East Asian Culture (Japan, China, Otaku/Anime, etc.). Thank you!

Also, I read that you lived in Japan for 16 yrs. That’s awesome! I’m trying to go to Japan for the first time by studying abroad sometime next year. ^^

  6. Hi All:

I am B-Digga, a hip hop, r&b, neo-soul, and acid jazz producer located in Washington, D.C.. I visited Japan (a long time ago) and had a simply amazing time – I was treated very well by everyone I met and was left with a great fondness for the country.I am now seeking to return the kindness (I hope) by exposing my music to a Japanese audience and (again, I hope) finding new friends and fans in Japan. If you are interested, you can check out my music via my website.

Anyway, I have a question for all of you: is there a site or online community I should be aware of for the Japanese hip hop scene? I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but I could really use some knowledgeable suggestions.

    Thanks in advance!

    Peace,

    B.

  7. Hey all,

I wanted to state that this site is wonderful. I’ve been following for a few months now and think that there are some great things here! Keep up the work.

    My statement:
I plan to move permanently to Japan in this coming June.. (Chotto Kowaii…) Anyways, I’m looking at jobs and things of that nature and I’m noticing that Japanese people work much longer times then “Western standards”. For those that are living in Japan, what time do you work and how do you think that effects you life?

I have always had an interest in Japan since I was young and now at 21 I’m really starting to want to visit sometime in the next few years but I want to go prepared so I really enjoy your articles.

  12. Hi BT,

My name is Coach. I’m from London and will be visiting Japan for 10 days with one of my best friends. I am 30 yrs old and have worked as a lawyer for the last 6 years. I’ve recently left private practice to work for the family business so re-visiting Japan with one of my closest friends is a great way to take a break from what is a very exciting period in my life. My friend is 30 too. We both studied Geography together at University of Birmingham in 2000. He is now an Area manager for a large retail firm. He can’t wait to get to Japan either.

We will be in Japan from the 14-24 April. Any recommendations for things to do in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka etc would be much appreciated.

Its been a while since I have been on this site but I have fond memories of the users and the information available.

    Take care!

    Coach

  13. Hi, Querter. I live in Seoul Korea as an enlgish teacher and I haven’t experienced any racism because I’m black. You will get the curious stares and people asking how old you are and where you’re from but that comes with the territory. When I first came down here I was waiting for the N word to come out of someones mouth or some other racist words based of my race. Nothing ever occured. I think it’s how you present yourself too. How you present yourself is how you’ll be treated. For example, when I first came down to Seoul, Korea I befriended a black individual who was really strongly identified from where he was from as a result he acted in a certain way which would made S. Koreans irritated with him. As a result his first experience in Korea wasn’t good. Just act professional and you’ll be treated with respect and no one will care about your race. But if you’re loud, overly aggressive you feed into that stereotypical American/Western image and you’ll be out cast. Learning the languages helps too to be accepted in the society.

  15. Hi Everyone,

For some reason, which I can’t explain I’m obsessed with Asian + [our] black history + culture.

I am not in Japan, but will be studying Japanese starting next month and applying to the JET program in the fall. After graduation…I just want to travel…everywhere…but anyway, if you have any tips or comments about learning Japanese please help me :-) Once I start being able to speak actual sentences it would be fun to have someone living in Japan to be able to practice with, too.

I am glad to have found this site ^_^
    See you in Tokyo.
    Someday.

  18. Does anyone have a room for rent, or know someone who has a room for rent? I’m an African American female, who is currently living in Tokyo. I would like a room in a house for 40,000 yen or less. Tokyo metro is my preference, but yokohama or nearby suburbs are fine as well.

    Thank you

  19. Hi, this is a wonderful and informative site. I am a University Professor visiting Tokyo and Kyoto in June (12 – 21) with two teenagers–we are African-Americans from New Jersey and Las Vegas. This is our first trip to Japan.

Are there any local events or get togethers in Tokyo or Kyoto that we may attend and meet other Blacks? Thanks for the site and any suggestions. We also need local guides.

  21. Well, I just turned 16 and I really wanted to travel to Japan. I’ve been interested in Japan since seven years of age and after buying so many magazines and a doll from Japan…I wanna go there! (lol) I bought a language book…but I’m having a hard time with the writing system and remembering what to say. Are there any programs that can make my dream come true? And are Japanese friendly? Thanks a bunch ^_^

  23. HI !Quertur
Did u already travel around Asia?
I am from Seoul and I am personally interested in intercultural relationship between South Korea,Japan and Brothers and Sisters :)
Well, Seoul is also a cosmopolitan city, so U don’t need to feel observed when u are here ( In the end, we are all from Africa)
I recommend u when u are in Seoul, U MUST try korean Barbecue and Bibimbab (Gimchi is also the famous national cusine but people love it or hate it),korean style spicy chicken as well!
And experience the emotional and loud side of Korean…
U can go to some concerts or clubs : usually situated near Hongik Univ
Insadong is also nice area to know little bit about Korean Culture.
And like any other soceity if u show some respect and smile,
Everything work it out smooth and easy!
I treid these global language when I lived in Harlem, New York
I had an awesome time there!
    Good luck and safe trip!

I understand your “OBSESSION” very well!
(I feel a bit like the “Morpheus” from “The Matrix” LOL)
Well, I must say I am more like Neo… I knew that I do not
feel comleted as a Korean or western orieted Korean whatever..
For some reason, I got the Opportunity to experience Soul
Sprit,History and Culture from Brothers and Sisters..
My journey through Bahia, Brazil and Atlanta,New Orleans
and Staying in Harlem, New York encourage me more.
And I have found out I love both cultures!(Asian and African Diaspora)
It must be nice to exchange some topics or help each other.

  30. Hi Zurui

I will be visiting Japan for the first time on June 23rd. My sister is Dawn Robinson from EnVogue and will be doing some shows in Osaka and Tokyo for Billboard Live. I was wondering if you could suggest some places for us to visit or restaurants we should not miss. We will be working, but want to see Japan as much as possible. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am open to any relationship that comes my way but I do have a preference. Just wanted some responses before I made my final decision.
